Visual Arts

At Whitefield Academy, our Visual Arts program is an integral part of every student’s educational and personal development. We believe and teach our students that all of human creativity is a reflection of our nature as God’s image-bearers. Through Visual Arts, our students learn not just about the principles of aesthetics, but about the moral and spiritual dimensions of themselves as creators.

Through weekly class sessions, Grammar School students explore a variety of artistic media and styles, emphasizing the elements of art. Upper School students have opportunities to take advanced classes in drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture and other media, where they will hone their skills and exercise their creativity with new freedom. All of Whitefield’s seniors complete their classical studies with a semester-long course in Art History.

In addition to classroom experiences, each year the Spring Art Show is held at Whitefield, in conjunction with our Upper School Shakespeare production, featuring every student’s best work from the year.

Our Visual Arts teachers bring diverse experiences to the classroom. Mr. Matt Appling teaches Upper and Lower School Visual Arts and Art History. He holds a BA in Studio Art and a Masters of Divinity. Mrs. Heather Huettner teaches Lower School Art and holds a BA in Art and an MA in Education. Between them, they have more than two decades of experience teaching Visual Arts
